Although I personally don’t like the idea of Jailbreaking my devices I get asked the question way too often. Will tomorrow means the first official week of everybody owning their brand-new iPhone 4S and having a chance to play with Apple’s new voice recognition and voice assisted application Siri. For the most part is seems af if Siri is for just asking it really stupid questions and attempting to find out the meaning of life. Siri is a lot smarter than that so I was glad when I ran across this video by Macworld editor Jason Snell where he put Siri through its paces asking it more practical things.

Due to issues of my contract I’m going to have to wait another month and a half before I can get my new iPhone 4S but Siri is definitely one of the applications I look forward most using. Even with all of the marriage request, lewd comments, repeated requests for knock knocks and otherwise wiseass things thrown at this new digital assistant as a GTDer I can see some serious value in the way speaking to your iPhone will help you get things done throughout the day.

The web is all a buzz with reports coming in from all over the Web, AT&T is to buy T-Mobile for a reported $39 billion dollars. The major reason why AT&T would want to do this to to now create the USA’s largest mobile network. Since according to AT&T their network traffic has increased over 8,000 percent in the last four years. I wonder why that is… surely not because of Droid… but I digress. Buying T-Mobile means AT&T would not have reinvent the wheel by expanding and building new towers to support the increasing growth in mobile demand.

I think this is kinda funny because many people out there thought they were sticking it to the preverbal MAN by jail breaking their iPhones. Yeah some claim it was to get apps that would never be approved by Apple, while others brazenly set out to buck the system and basically steal from AT&T and Apple. I think this reason is bullshit and they totally deserve having their theft cock-blocked by AT&T.

TextExpander (formerly Textpander) is the best of the best Text Macro Apps. In this post I hope to explain to you why you must get TextExpander.

If you were to ask almost any Mac Power User what they have installed on their computer in the way of must have utilities, a sure answer is TextExpander. What exactly is TextExpander? Well it and automated typist for your computer. Ok let me clarify that a bit, it can take the very tedious task of typing the same bits of text over and over again and make them simple abbreviations. Ok that may not sound that important at first; however, after you install TextExpander you can see how easy and effective it really is.

TextExpander can do a whole lot more once you understand the basics of what it can do. It is very easy to take large blocks of boilerplate text and make them expandable in a few keystrokes, but the real power comes from using TextExpander with the many collections of snippets shared on the Web. Smile Software (formerly Smile on My Mac) has made a great list of “Predefined Snippet Groups” available on their site for you to download, install and maybe be inspired to create more of your own.

Examples

HTML: leading character is a comma

Example: ,img expands to:

<img src="%fill:url%" alt="%fill:image description%" width="%fill:width%" height="%fill:height%" border="%fill:border%" align="%fill:alignment%" />

When you trigger this snippet, TextExpander will prompt you to fill in the attribute specs. You can leave any of the specs blank, if not needed.

ACCENTED WORDS

Fixes words that are spelled with diacritical marks, aka accents. If you are used t typing these words like an American TE will autocorrect them so as you won’t offend anyone, like your third grade French teacher.

Example: creme brulee => crème brûlée.

TidBITS AUTOCORRECT DICTIONARY

This list contain 2400+ of the most common misspellings compiled by TidBITS, the newsletter and Web site for Mac users. I find this one very useful as it doesn’t just point out the mistake like spell check, It autocorrects them and makes a ping sound so you know you just misspelled a word.

Some Heavy Lifting

TextExpander can do some every heavy lifting for hardcore scriveners or code monkeys. I use these tools a lot but rather than messing up the explanation I’ll send you to read Brett Terpstra’s post on TE tools and how he uses them. Thanks to Brett, I’m becoming a Markdown Maven using TextExpander tools to get my writing done light years faster.

Another great plus to TextExpander is the integration with it’s mobil app offspring TextExpander Touch which brings many of the snippets and auto completion features to you handheld devices. I have found this to be a lifesaver when needing to get a fast response out via my iPhone or iPad. This also make the mobile platform perfect to blogging or just free-writing. It does have some limitations on iOS but Smile offers this note as a work around:

Given the current feature set of the iPhone OS, TextExpander touch cannot work in the background (as it does in Mac OS X), expanding text snippets while you work in other apps, except for apps with TextExpander-integration built-in. You must first compose your text in the TextExpander touch Compose screen, and then transfer it to another app.

So I decided to give it a shot. What I found at Airbnb.com was that the website is absolutely amazing. In a nut shell Airbnb.com allows homeowners or condo dwellers the opportunity to rent out their extra room or otherwise unoccupied living space like a hotel to people traveling in their area. This works great for a place like San Francisco because a lot of San Francisco people are bi-coastal or frequent flying corporate employees.

There was some great deals on the site ranging from apartments to share with the owner to apartments to take over; with pricing from about $30/night and up. I was luck enough to score a room in Soma, (South of market to the non-San Franciscans) for $65/night. Naturally at first, I thought to myself “So, what’s the catch?” And much to my amazement, there is nothing outside of a $30 booking fee that basically goes to keeping Airbnb in business. To make booking easier, Airbnb.com has a clever IOS application which I promptly installed on my iPhone and through their iPhone application I was even able to check out deals of the day in various locations, too bad I wasn’t on my way to Paris. I found the app easy to use, easy to search, and signing up to actually communicate directly with the temporary landlord was pretty painless as I was able to get updates via email, Text or from Airbnb.com.com.

Before I made my reservation, I decided to view the profile of my host (Joe G) and lucky me, he is one of the designers for Airbnb.com which made me feel a little less like I was signing up be roomies with an Axe Murder. Once I was able to talk to Joe, he sent me a text to let me know I was able to book my space so I did the booking and got my confirmation within minutes. Painless!!!

The next time you’re traveling and you want to save some money, I strongly suggest you check out Airbnb. This San Francisco company has spaces in over 8,000 cities in 160 countries and has nearly 184 million user miles traveled. Click on the link below if you want to see what they have to offer. After a week for link-baiting and slowly leaking stories al over the nets about the forthcoming 4G iPhone it looks like Giz’s Wiz may be in “deep kimchee”.

I say the whole thing was purely link-baitig because Gizmodo has received over 14 million page views on about 15 post about the Fourth Jesus Phone. See normal journalist normally drop a bombshell all in one post/story and soon do an update piece to add on or clear up details… The losers at Gizmodo in true tabloid fashion dropped approximately 15 articles on the topic keeping it and them top of mind on all major news fronts thusly gaining unheard of ad revenues and publicity worth more than that… cheating fucktards.

I for one will never read Gizmodo again because they are ruining it for all bloggers and citizen journalist.

Opera Mini for The iPhone

Opera today announced its popular mobile browser, Opera Mini has been approved for iPhone and iPod touch on the App Store. Opera Mini will be available as a free download within 24 hours, depending on market.

Opera Mini, with more than 50 million users worldwide, enables fast mobile Web browsing by compressing data by up to 90 percent before sending content to the device, resulting in significantly improved page loading. Users of the app will notice an uptake in speed, especially on slower networks such as the 2G Edge network. Surfing the Web with the Opera Mini App on iPhone and iPod touch will also help users save money because of its data compression capabilities. This will hold especially true while the user is incurring roaming charges.

“We are delighted to offer iPhone and iPod touch users a great browsing experience with the Opera Mini App,” said Lars Boilesen, CEO, Opera Software. “This app is another step toward Opera’s goal of bringing the Web to more people in more places.”
